Summer has brought the heat — and with rising temperatures comes higher energy costs. You might be debating whether you should crank up the AC, turn on your fans, and invest in blackout curtains, but there are other ways to stay cool this summer without frying your budget.

Unplug and Save
Plugged-in electronics still draw power even when you’re not using them through something called a “phantom load”. Unplug devices you aren’t using to shave a couple of dollars off your monthly bill!
Upgrade Your Thermostat
If you’ve been thinking about a thermostat upgrade, now is a great time to make the switch! Smart thermostats adapt to your schedule, so you can avoid spending money cooling an empty house.
Use Your Appliances Strategically
Ovens and dryers are excellent heat conductors and a great way to make your house hotter on long days. Try to plan your oven and dryer use strategically — aim for the early morning or late evening. And when possible, opt for meals that don’t require an oven or hang your clothes to dry.
Switch to Energy-Efficient Lighting
Have you ever gone to change a lightbulb and noticed how hot it was? Switching from traditional light bulbs to energy-efficient LED bulbs can reduce the amount of heat circulating in your home and lower your overall energy consumption. Plus, they last longer!
Check for Poor Insulation
Gaps in your window and door insulation can let outside heat sneak in, making your AC work overtime. Make sure to routinely check the weatherproofing around every door and window to keep your home cool and your monthly energy bill on track.
Go Green
It may be summer, but this season’s color is green. Indoor plants help lower temperatures while keeping your space looking great. Plus, they improve air quality — so you can spend less money on air purifiers!
Remember, staying cool doesn’t always mean cranking the AC or spending more money on fans and curtains. Being a little strategic around the house can keep temperatures down and more money in your pocket!
